Let’s take a closer look at five such events that will illuminate the world of chess before the year’s end.

Chess.com Fog of War Championship (Dec 10–12, 2025)

Now imagine this… you are playing chess, not with the whole board visible, but with a twist introduced by the “fog of war” which is also known as “dark chess”. Participants must therefore be instinctual and creative with their moves, as your opponent’s positions are hidden in a way that only squares your pieces consumes will be visible as seen in the image below.

It makes every single match exciting and unpredictable. Popular streamers, titled players, and personalities will compete against each other in rapid-fire matches with short time controls. A great way to inspire students is by holding a Fog of War Creativity Night, playing mini-matches and sharing one bold idea they used.

FIDE World Rapid Championships (Dec 25–28, 2025)

This prestigious event crowns the best rapid player in the world. With shortened time control, every decision counts and the pressure is immense. World champions, top-20 grandmasters, national champions, and rising juniors all take part. Games are typically 15 minutes plus a 10-second increment per move, played across 13 rounds in a Swiss format.

FIDE World Blitz Championship (Dec 28–30, 2025)

Blitz is chess at lightning speed. With 3+2 time controls and countless rounds, it produces jaw-dropping upsets and viral moments. FIDE has even updated the format for 2025 to make sure there are decisive results and maximum excitement. Blitz specialists, elite grandmasters, and fearless juniors will all be competing. A Blitz Confidence Hour can have students work on short timed exercises and then reflect on how they dealt with speed and emotional control.

London Chess Classic (Nov 26–Dec 7, 2025)

More than just a tournament, London Chess Classic is a complete chess festival having elite round-robins, norm-seeking opens, rapid events, and community sessions. It’s a celebration of the game! Ten top grandmasters headline the invitational while the FIDE Open and U-2100 sections give ambitious players a chance to shine. A London Classic Week at the club could include watching one elite game each evening, analysing key moments, and finishing with a weekend festival.

US Masters (Nov 26–30, 2025)

US Masters, held over Thanksgiving weekend, often features up-and-coming American juniors competing against seasoned titled players. It’s a hotbed of GM and IM norm opportunities and local hero stories. The Masters section has a guaranteed $25,000 prize fund. A Thanksgiving Training Sprint can follow the same rhythm of the event: brief daily lessons are followed by student reflections such as “What I learned from round X”.
